Changing the Industry

FaceTime has essentially changed the game for the video communication industry. This application is a major leap from other video calling solutions and is challenging its competition to catch up. FaceTime has had this impact for at least two reasons.

The first is that FaceTime is achieving a "degree of ubiquity" very much unlike any other video calling platform on the market. It is available free of charge. This application has bridged the gap between video calling on a phone and video calling on a computer. Almost any Apple product has use FaceTime, putting it in the hands of more consumers than any of its competitors (save Skype). While FaceTime still has to overcome the limitation of interoperability (particularly with non-Apple products) to achieve complete ubiquity, it is quite clear that FaceTime is leading the industry.

The second reason that FaceTime is taking the lead is that this application is "simple, straightforward, and works". There is nothing complicated about using FaceTime to make a video call, while the opposite is true of other video calling applications. FaceTime will likely be the platform that has video calling adopted into the mainstream. As video calling becomes a major telecommunications medium, every company in the industry will have to grow and evolve to keep up. [1]
Take a look at how FaceTime compares to one of its largest competitors, Skype.
Obviously, FaceTime delivers a superior video calling experience.

Changing Businesses

It is very obvious how businesses can take advantage of FaceTime video calling. Video conferencing has been available for quite some time now; however, only large companies could really afford expensive systems. [2] FaceTime, however, makes video calling so easy and so inexpensive that smaller businesses and even the average consumer can afford it.

FaceTime video calling really exemplifies globalization and the rise of the global village. The barriers of time and space are eliminated as "air travel and electronic media have made it easier for the people of the globe to communicate with each other". [3]
